Imaging CO Emission in Gas Rich Galaxies at High Redshifts

چکیده
Observations of the cold, dense gas at high redshifts directly address fundamental questions regarding the early evolution of galaxies and quasars. The Owens Valley Millimeter Array provides excellent sensitivity and resolutions better than 1 00. The spatial distribution of red-shifted CO emission is found to be resolved in most detected objects. For example, 1 kpc size scale for the CO emitting region is inferred using a gravitational lens model in z=2.6 quasar H1413+117. Our new observations suggest that the CO source in z=4.7 quasar BR 1202-0725 may be spatially displaced from the optical quasar.

Low-excitation gas in HR 10: possible implications for estimates of metal-rich H2 mass at high redshifts
We examine the physical conditions of the molecular gas in the extremely red object (ERO), HR10 (J164502+4626.4, or [HR94] 10) at z = 1.44, as constrained by the recent detection of CO J + 1 → J, J = 1, 4 lines. The line ratios of such widely spaced CO transitions are very sensitive probes of gas excitation; in the case of HR10, they provide a rare opportunity to study the state of H2 gas in a ...

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملInterferometric Observations of Powerful Co Emission from Three Submillimeter Galaxies at Z = 2.39, 2.51 and 3.35
We report IRAM Plateau de Bure, millimeter interferometry of three z ∼2.4 to 3.4, SCUBA deep field galaxies. Our CO line observations confirm the rest-frame UV/optical redshifts, thus more than doubling the number of confirmed, published redshifts of the faint submillimeter population and proving their high-z nature. In all three sources our measurements of the intrinsic gas and dynami-cal mass...
متن کاملSmm J04135+10277: a Candidate Early–stage “wet–dry” Merger of Two Massive Galaxies at Z=2.8
We report interferometric imaging of CO(J=3→2) emission toward the z=2.846 submillimeterselected galaxy SMMJ04135+10277, using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA). SMMJ04135+10277 was previously thought to be a gas-rich, submillimeterselected quasar, with the highest molecular gas mass among high-z quasars reported in the literature. Our maps at ∼6× improved lin...
متن کاملGone with the heat: a fundamental constraint on the imaging of dust and molecular gas in the early Universe
Images of dust continuum and carbon monoxide (CO) line emission are powerful tools for deducing structural characteristics of galaxies, such as disc sizes, H2 gas velocity fields and enclosed H2 and dynamical masses. We report on a fundamental constraint set by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on the observed structural and dynamical characteristics of galaxies, as deduced from dust contin...
